Brand Design for the New Kid on the Block
STEP 1 - WE CAN HAVE LOTS OF FUN
Yes, fun! Creating your new brand should be an enjoyable process. During the initial concept development stage, no idea is ‘stupid’ - it’s all about exploring where your ideas can go.
I like the ‘mild to wild’ approach to brand identity design. While many ideas won’t make it beyond the thumbnail stage, they’re no less important than those worth exploring further. So, yes - have fun with your designs!
STEP 2 - THERE’S SO MUCH WE CAN DO
Just like the first step, it’s important not to commit to any one idea too early on.
Explore, explore, and explore some more. The initial concept might end up being the final direction, but don’t limit yourself too soon. Another great idea might emerge if you remain open to fresh possibilities.
STEP 3 - IT’S JUST YOU AND ME
Client collaboration is integral to brand development. Businesses need to genuinely love and believe in their brand in order to confidently market themselves. This is why client feedback and input are crucial.
That said, I recommend not asking too many people outside the project for their opinion. People tend to react impulsively, especially if they don’t have all the context about the project and its goals. It’s like baking a cake with missing ingredients - things can easily go wrong. Keep your decision-makers small and close to the project.
It’s just you (the business and/or project team) and me (the designer)!
STEP 4 - I CAN GIVE YOU MORE
I’m just going to skip over any innuendo here and stay on track.
Businesses often say they ‘need a logo,’ but what they really need are multiple elements to create a cohesive brand. Things like colour, typography, custom patterns or icons, and brand guidelines are essential to pull it all together. These are the pieces that will help your brand and business grow.
Branding is built on more than just a logo - it’s about a consistent ‘look and feel.’ And that’s where your business will thrive.
STEP 5 - DON’T YOU KNOW THAT THE TIME IS RIGHT?
Or is it? If you’re unsure whether your business is ready for a new logo, brand refresh, or complete rebrand, that’s okay!
Many graphic designers offer free discovery calls to discuss where your branding is now, and where you want it to be.
And if the time is right, they’ll have a process to guide your branding project smoothly in 5 simple steps* (*the number of steps may vary depending on your taste in music).
